Optimizing your Images for SEO

Written on October 12, 2007 by admin

There is more than one way to improve SEO for your site. Aside from the usual keyword optimization on your content articles, you can also optimize your images to get a better ranking in search engines.

1. Before you load your images to your website, makes sure that they are properly named. For example, if you are targeting the keyword “car insurance” then you include this phrase as file name for your images.

2. In your page coding, make sure to use the “alt” attribute. The “alt” is basically used in labeling your images. It is actually the “alternative text” for pictures. At times, it would only be the thing displayed on the screen in case your images do not load. The “alt” tag is also useful for people who are using a text-only browser. Using alt attribute can increase your chances in getting a good pagerank.

3. Make sure that you use the “alt” attribute properly. Here is an example:
<img src=”car insurance.jpg” height=”200″ width=”200″ alt=”cheap car insurance”>

Google keep a database of images, and so are the rest of the popular search engines. This means that they do index images too. If you want to achieve a higher page rank, follow the tips above to optimize your website better!

    Definitely. Alt tags are good from an accessibility perspective and are essential for valid code. I’ve noticed that if the name and alt tags are chosen carefully you can get a trickle of visits from google image searches.
