Color Overlay
Written on June 17, 2007 by admin
For this tutorial I am going to start off with the black and white image below.
Load this image or another of your choice into photosop. File>Open

Now that you have your image open in photoshop select the magnetic lasso tool from
the tools menu (see Figure 2A). Now that we have the lasso tool selected click on the
edge of a floer pedal and carefully move your mouse around the edges of the flower.
Your selection should snap to the edges (Figure 2B).

Now that you have your flower selected make a new layer goto Layer>New>Layer
(or Ctrl+Shift+N) enter a name for your new layer and press enter. Now you can select
a color from your swatches palette. And fill your selection Edit>Fill (or Alt+Del).
Your picture should now look like Figure 3A. now in the layers palette change the
Blending mode (Figure 3B) to “COLORâ€. Remove your selection (Press Ctrl+D)
And your picture should now look like Figure 3C.

NOTE: you do not necessarilly have to use the magnetic lasso but when it comes to
getting close to the edges of a particular area it helps a lot. You can also use the
retangular marquee or elliptical marquee as well as the airbrush to color areas that you
wish to overlay.
