Adding Images to Your HTML Page

A website with no images would be just boring.
Luckily, using HTML to build images is quite simple and easily done. However, there are a few pitfalls to watch out for. In order to put an image in an HTML document, you must use the img tag.
It looks like this: <img src=”http://www.somedomain.com/images/logo.gif” width=”160″ height=”70″ alt=”My Company Logo” />
Let’s break down what each part of the tag means, so we truly understand it.
The src attribute tells the web browser where the image is located. It is similar to the a attribute, in that it can be either fixed (like in this example), or relative. For example, if you had the logo stored in a directory on your site called images, you could just use <img src=â€images/logo.gifâ€â€¦ In that case, the file is said to be relative to the root directory of the website. After the browser finds out where the file is located, it wants to know how large the image is. With the tags in place, it tells the browser how much space is required even as the page loads. If you leave these out, the image will still show, but your formatting will jump around while the page is loading.
The alt tag contains a text description of the image. This is required now on the latest HTML standards. It is used by those who cannot see the images or those who elect not to see them. One thing to pay attention to is that there is no closing tag for the alt attribute. Rather, when you close the img tag with the /> it closes the alt tag as well.
Now that you know how to put an image on an HTML page, you are ready to begin decorating your website. Get busy!
